T-Time Podcast // Ep. 47: Tips, Tricks, and Stories from Pebble Beach

beginner golfers girls gone golfing retreats golf tips and tricks on the course podcast

Alix, Ashley, and Everardo join Tori as they reminisce about their recent retreat at Pebble Beach, CA for the 2023 Creek Cup. Pebble Beach, CA is a truly special place that should be on everyone's bucket list. Though it can be expensive, it is worth every penny. Whether planning a girls' trip or a couple's getaway, visiting Pebble Beach, CA should be a part of your plans.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, they had the opportunity to play the stunning Dunes Course at Pebble Beach, CA. Thanks to their connections from Desert Classic, they could enjoy the round with newfound friends. The weather started off sunny and warm, defying their initial concerns. However, as the day progressed, the temperature dropped noticeably, especially around 5 P.M. Despite the longer rounds, lasting close to six hours, they embraced the unique experience of playing golf in the beautiful spot, where the normal pace of play is five and a half hours.

Experience from Golf Courses in Pebble Beach, CA

The team had the opportunity to play at three distinct golf courses during their trip. Here's a brief overview of each course:

1.   Pebble Beach Golf Links:

The green fee at Pebble Beach Golf Links is excessively steep (with an additional requirement of reserving a hotel room for a minimum of $600 per night to secure a tee time in advance). The pace of play may not be the fastest, and the opening hole may be lackluster. However, the breathtaking landscape, the storied history of golf played on its fairways and greens, and the immeasurable wow factor make it an invaluable experience that every serious golfer should have at least once.

2.  The Links at Spanish Bay:

The course starts with an exceptional par-5 hole, offering a breathtaking view of Spanish Bay from its green. While some purists argue that the presence of woods, wetlands, and forced carries detracts from its classification as a true links course. The presence of a gentle breeze, firm turf, and a bagpiper playing his tune along the first fairway at twilight create an ambiance reminiscent of Scotland—albeit with added luxury that the Scots never experienced.

3.   Spyglass Golf Course:

Spyglass, always known as the toughest course utilized in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, impresses immediately with its breathtaking sea views, mesmerizing dunes, and thrilling elevation changes on the first five holes. As if that weren't enough, it further intensifies the challenge on the back nine, which is heavily wooded and somewhat less dramatic. Considered the most demanding among the trio of courses, Spyglass truly delivers a memorable and demanding golfing experience. While it boasts a handful of scenic holes along the water, most of the course is nestled within a picturesque wooded forest area.

While Pebble Beach Golf Links provided breathtaking views and Spanish Bay had its own allure, Spyglass was regarded as the least favorite due to its narrower fairways and limited coastal exposure.

Double-Bag Caddies at the Courses

During their Spanish Bay, Spyglass, and Pebble Beach Golf Links rounds, the team had double-bag caddies. Unlike in Scotland and Ireland, where caddies typically carry both bags, here, carts are available for use. However, the caddies still assist by running back and forth, bringing clubs and other items as needed. This system allows players to have the convenience of a cart while still benefiting from the caddies' local knowledge and support. The presence of carts and the back-and-forth movement of the caddies may have contributed to the longer duration of the rounds.

Caddy Tips

Based on the information found on the Pebble Beach Golf Links website, it was suggested to tip the caddies between $75 and $100. To ensure consistency, the participants were advised to tip a minimum of $100 per caddy. They could tip more if they felt the caddies deserved it or had an exceptional experience. Having this suggested tipping range provided a helpful guideline, as it's not always easy to determine an appropriate amount. It's important for pro shops and golf clubs to be clear about the minimum tip for basic service to avoid any confusion.

Conclusion

The bond among the women on this trip was strong, with a mix of single players and others who had lifelong friendships. Everyone bonded and got along well, mixing up dinners and creating a welcoming atmosphere. The experience allowed for capturing diverse group photos, highlighting the camaraderie. Spending time with a large group of female golfers provided opportunities for bonding, sharing stories, supporting each other, and celebrating personal milestones. The connections formed during these trips extended beyond the golf course as spouses and partners also started getting together. It was an enriching experience for everyone involved.
