Catching Up with Kim

golf tips and tricks on the course podcast tournament golf

In this episode of T-Time with Tori, we’ll get into updates on the one and only Kim Eaton, the former vice president of Papago WGA (Women’s Golf Association) and Colorado Hall of Famer. The two met twelve years ago when Kim took Tori under her wing, inspiring her to explore her potential through multiple tournaments.

Kim shares what competing in Colorado, Arizona, and other major tournaments has been like. Through her journey, she paints how taking on intimidating tournaments, like the USGA Mid-Am, can transform your game. She believes that with preparation, perseverance, and dedication, it’s always possible to excel in golf.

Kim’s Journey Through Arizona in Action

Kimberly Eaton’s summer was far from the usual, filled with exciting moments as she went about competing in golf tournaments up north. Despite rumors of dry spells, the area was periodically blessed with showers, making the stay pleasant with soothing rain sounds on the porch.

We learn how Kim competed in the Arizona-Utah Shootout, an exciting coed golf event that made players from different states stand against one another. This year, the tournament took her to Utah, where she played in full swing despite the chilly 42°F weather — all stacked in layers of clothes (and determination!).

A Glimpse of Kim Eaton at the USGA Senior Amateur

Qualifying for the USGA senior is a huge deal, but even more surprising is that this year marks Kim’s 15th consecutive appearance in the game. For Kim, this year’s qualifier at Paradise Valley Country Club was quite a challenge, including a tough double bogey on the 18th hole. Yet, she managed to pull a 77 and secure a spot among 37 that got in.

Kim’s Approach at the Championship

Kim’s approach was really impressive at the championship. She explained how she’d combat her anxiety even when things didn’t go her way. While she’s not a fan of practice rounds, she undertook them to get a feel for the course. With loads of resilience all along, she pulled off the 44th out of 64 spots.

Nonetheless, Kim’s journey ended when she faced Ellen Port, a seven-time USGA champion. But the loss didn’t bring her morale down, either. Even as the oldest player to make it to the second round of match play, nothing quite shakes up her competitive spirit. This inspires a positive attitude among rookies or golfers who feel stuck in their individual journeys.

What Ellen Port Does Differently on the Course

You might wonder what makes Ellon Port win the tournament so frequently and whether she has a secret approach. Well, for starters, she shows off an impressive distance off the tee, hitting the ball about 30 yards further than most competitors (or Kim Eaton herself).

But her wins have more to do with than just the ‘long hits.’ In fact, the secret is perhaps Ellen’s ability to keep her shots straight consistently and on target more often than not.

Kim’s Experience at Colorado Mid-Am (Summer)

Kim talked about her experience at Colorado Mid-Am, and oh boy, it was nothing short of fiercely competitive. Perhaps the main reason why it was tough was that it’s a tournament designed for players aged 25 or older, which implies competing against young ages. Kim also mentioned facing tough competition with her pod, which included Janet Moore, Marilyn Hardy, and Lyn Mastowski.

She approached the tournament with a simple goal: play her best. This, in turn, helped her find her rhythm at the Loveland Golf Course. Fun fact? The day didn’t quite start well - Kim experienced trouble breathing and needed some fixing with her ribs. Nonetheless, it ended up adding another trophy to her collection!

Senior Open Experience: The Real Rollercoaster Ride

Kim’s summer season came with many highs and lows, but her experience with the USGA Senior Open presented a whole new story. After almost missing out during the qualifier in Colorado, she became the first alternate to make it through. And although the odds seemed slim, she didn’t give up till the last-minute call.

During the qualifier, Kim faced a six-player playoff for one spot, along with two pros and three amateurs. The results weren’t quite certain, but she received a text from the USGA that she could play in the Senior Open. The only twist was that her tee time was 8:40 a.m. the next day in Pittsburgh.

Quite obviously, she wanted to make it. But the logistical challenges were incredible. The only viable option was to land in Pittsburgh just an hour before tee time. Hence, it’s no surprise Kim couldn’t really make it to the Senior Open.

Weighing the Pros & Cons of Different Golf Locations: A Quick October Tournament Preview

Since the October tournament is a big deal, so is its planning. Here’s a quick look at the potential destinations discussed for the event:

  • Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

While the logistics here might be tricky, there are housing options all over the place, making it a strong destination.

  • Palm Desert, California

This area has top-tier golf courses and also handles large groups. However, it’s too much like Phoenix, so it doesn’t attract new players much.

  • Big Cedar Lodge, Missouri

Although a unique spot, it often comes with high green fees. This, in turn, prices out many participants, which isn’t a good thing at all.

  • Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Alabama

This one’s not as famous, but it’s definitely an option worth considering for the October tournament!

What’s Coming Up?

The good news? There’s a lot on the horizon. First, there’s the Arizona Partner’s Event at the Oro Valley Country Club. Apparently, it’s very different from other courses in the area, but Kim mentions never having played here.

Then, there’s the State Match Play at Southern Dunes (Kim’s all-time favorite). While it’s challenging, it’s also incredibly fun. Looking further ahead, the season opener at Robson Ranch in February is a two-day event this year, too. With so much on the line, it’s going to be one busy season for golf enthusiasts!

Conclusion

As is evident by Kim Eaton’s golf journey, the secret to success lies in staying consistent and having a strong will to compete. Ups and downs are quite normal, but what matters is that they shouldn’t weigh you down. Despite multiple logistical, health, and similar hurdles, Kim doesn't cease to show her strength and deep love for the game.

As we look ahead, the coming days are going to be full of possibilities, especially for those who are committed to taking on challenges. Take it one step at a time, and no one can stop you!
