Try This Pre-Round Warm Up Routine For a Great Game of Golf

golf routines golf tips and tricks

We’ve all heard the well-known phrase: fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Golfing is all about having fun, and just like with any other sport, warming up is important!

As well as loosening up your body and getting back into the swing of things, following this routine is also a great way to enhance your golfing performance.

Keep reading to find out how I warm up when preparing for tee off!

How to Warm Up Before You Start Playing Golf

1. Build Your Way Up From Small to Large Swings

One of the most essential parts of a pre-round warm up routine is getting some practice in with the clubs in your golfing bag. Getting used to the way they feel will improve your performance, and loosen up your body for a day on the course.

Start off with some smaller swings, building from chip shots and pitch shots all the way up to your hybrids and drivers. You don’t have to try out every club in your bag either – my best tip is to work through every other club until you’re feeling smooth and comfortable.

 2. Test Shot 5-6 Balls With Each Club

You may be wondering how many balls you should be hitting with each club that you practice with. It’s only an hour-long warm up, so don’t worry about piling up hundreds of balls. The pre-round warm up is all about getting comfortable with your shots, so 5-6 balls should do the trick!

3. Mats and Grass are Equally Valid Forms of Practice

People often ask why mats are used on some ranges while others use grass. The reason is pretty simple – golf courses use mats to give their grass a chance to breathe and grow back in after a seasonal cut.

Plenty of expert golfers prefer using mats, so don’t feel as if you’re not doing things properly if you’re not on grass. Both are perfectly satisfactory ways of completing your pre-round warm up routine for an exceptional game of golf.

4. Balance Your Time Between Range and Putting Practice

You should always aim to get to the course one hour before you tee off to allow plenty of time for your pre-round warm up. Balance is everything when it comes to golfing, so be sure to give yourself enough time with each practice for optimum results.

After spending 20 minutes or so on the range, move onto the chipping green and try out some putting skills before teeing off. This combination will ensure you’re in full control of your swings, and will help you feel ready to do some putting.

That’s everything you need to know about my pre-round warm up routine! If you take things at a leisurely pace and give your body a chance to adjust, you’re guaranteed to have fun and reach your latest golfing goals.
