Championship Stories & Reflections with Sue Wooster

Today we have a very special guest joining the show: Sue Wooster. Wooster is currently ranked as the number three senior women golfer overall. Impressed? You should be. Such achievements aren’t easily attained. Being able to maintain a top ranking in a sport as challenging as golf requires hard work and dedication. But Wooster offers an inspiring perspective.

Perfecting the Short Game

Remembering an event at the MidAm qualifier at Maribel, she recalls the course was unusually long, with many uphill shots. Despite not hitting a lot of greens and the difficult conditions, Wooster managed to come out on top with the lowest score of the day. The secret behind her success didn’t lie in her ability to hit long shots—it was her exceptional short game strategy that led her to victory.

Wooster points out that a good short game is key, especially in difficult situations. In desert courses, for instance, she found it easier to simply fly the shot near the hole and stop it, instead of having to consider numerous factors. That particular day, she managed to chip the ball extremely close to the hole most of the time, positioning herself to make a lot of successful putts.

When it comes to player concerns about needing to hit farther to perform better, Wooster argues that distance isn’t the only factor that matters. Sure, it’s an advantage to hit further when the course is long. However, she insists that this does not prevent one from achieving a decent score. As Wooster underscores, success in the game “always comes back to the short game.”

One of the cornerstones of Wooster's strategy is short-putting. Particularly at five feet or less from the hole, Wooster believes a player should hardly ever miss a shot. Efficiency at short putting gives the player an edge and prevents losing strokes unnecessarily.  However, the challenge for many golfers is the undue pressure they put on themselves when making these supposedly ‘easy’ shots. Wooster advises players not to rush these shots, to maintain their pre-shot routine, and to avoid getting tense.

Preparation for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship

Sue recounts her experiences leading up to the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship, from her early years in the game to her high hopes when she first competed in the prestigious tournament. Drawn from Australia, she quickly realized that although she was a strong player, she wasn't amongst the best senior amateur women in the world. Although this reality check was a challenge, it motivated Sue to work harder over the years, continually improving and going farther in the competition with each passing year.

The Challenge of Adapting to Different Courses

Sue reflects on her experience when the tournament was held in Florida, recalling the challenges she faced adapting to the new conditions, specifically the grainy Bermuda grass she wasn't used to. Despite the challenging circumstances, she didn’t let the change in environment deter her, opting to spend more time practicing on the foreign grass rather than throwing in the towel. She also discusses the adjustment she had to make when hitting off the fairways, calling it a different sensation compared to hitting off her usual turf.

Making It to the Finals

Sue shares her journey to the 2017 finals, highlighting the unpredictable nature of match play in golf, which she says requires all stars to align for a player. Getting into the final was both exhilarating and daunting as she was competing against the previous champion, Lara Tenn. The intense schedule – 10 rounds of golf in 8 days, in the Florida heat, with early mornings and late nights - took its toll, though Sue was resolute in battling through vertigo and sleepless nights to give her best performance in the finals.

The Aftermath of the Championship and Scope for Future

Sue confides that losing the 2017 finals to Lara Tenn was a devastating experience that took her a year to overcome. Notwithstanding, this setback did not dampen her spirit, but rather incited her to keep striving. Acknowledging that getting to the finals of a prestigious event like the USGA requires effort and resilience, Sue is determined to seize any future opportunity with more grit – a testament to her unwavering dedication to the sport. Despite the challenges, Sue's journey reflects the single-minded determination of a true champion.

Playing Against the Odds at Cedar Rapids

When Sue started the Cedar Rapids championship in Iowa in 2018, she didn't expect to reach the final. At the time, her game wasn't at its best and the odds were stacked against her. But, in the world of golf, the tides can turn unexpectedly. Though her game wasn’t up to the mark initially, she managed to qualify in the top half, proving that even with slim chances, anything is possible in golf.

During the Cedar Rapids tournament, Sue played through stroke play rounds, and though she wasn’t confident of making it far, she kept inching ahead. Her husband and caddy, Keith, was also her biggest supporter, entertaining thoughts of sightseeing during their trip. With Keith looking to explore Mount Rushmore, Sue found motivation to extend her time on the course. She beat the odds and won three matches on the 18th hole, a particularly challenging one.

The Dramatic Final

Making it to the final, she found herself facing Laura Tenon again. The match was tough, and Sue recalls having light sleep the night before. She recognized the importance of a calm mind before an important match. Despite not winning the final, Sue gained a valuable perspective from the experience, realizing that she could potentially reach the final again, altering her outlook on USGA events.

Reflections and Recovery

While Sue didn't walk away from the championship with the victory she'd hoped for, her resilience under pressure showcased her incredible sportsmanship and talent. Reflecting on her loss, Sue stated that it took about three days to fully recover from the defeat. Far from being disheartened, Sue used this experience to positively shape her approach to future USGA events.

USGA in Alabama: A Game of Expectations and Realities

Sue reminisced about the year 2019 championship held in Alabama. This game, she admits, didn't resonate with her. The course just didn't light the anticipated fire within her. In stark contrast to this were the tournaments held in Vero Beach and Cedar Rapids. These, she notes, stirred the desired flame in her, setting her up for some engaging gameplay.

Tournaments can vastly differ in their appeal to individual players, and Sue's experience is a testament to the somewhat subjective nature of professional golf appraisals. Although all courses and tournaments carry their unique complexities, some can act as catalysts, sparking a golfer's zeal, while others may appear uninspiring.

The Pressure and the Mistakes

Fast-forward to match day, Sue found herself succumbing to the mounting pressures of the tournament. Her sterling performances in the previous two finals she had participated in had set high expectations. This, unfortunately, led to a lackluster performance in the preliminary match, marking the start of a faltering tournament for her.

Sue pinpoints a significant mistake during this period - her premature transition to newly fitted graphite clubs from her seasoned steel clubs. This decision greatly impacted her gameplay, causing erratic shots and low scores.

Lessons: Acceptance and Moving Forward

Nevertheless, Sue's ability to bounce back is remarkable. Reflecting on the Alabama tournament, she admits her mistakes and credits the experience with valuable lessons learned. She shares that in golf, or any sport for that matter; one doesn't win very often. It's a testament that there's more to golf than victories; the key is to embrace the journey, with its victories and defeats alike.

Moreover, Sue stresses that such losses shouldn't be dwelled on as they serve only to drain energy and positivity. Instead, there is a need to "get back on the horse" and focus on improving for future tournaments.

The Alabama tournament wasn't altogether ideal for Sue, but she managed to find positive takeaways.

USGA Cancellation Due to Covid-19

In the midst of 2020, the much-anticipated USGA events had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The effects of this pandemic carried onto 2021 as well, resulting in a complete halt of USGA events. As a result, the calendar years appear to skip from 2019 to 2022.

The USGA Tournament in Alaska

Yet, despite these setbacks, one noteworthy event occurred in 2021. The USGA had planned to host a tournament in Alaska and assigned the senior women for this endeavor. This event marked the culmination of USGA events being hosted in all 50 states.

Residents of Alaska gave enthusiastic support, making this event an unforgettable one. In fact, the golf course was even renovated for the tournament, alluding to the scale of local anticipation and involvement. Despite uncertainties with the course conditions due to a dry summer, weather conditions were favorable and the competition proceeded as planned.

Experience of Sue During the Tournament

For Sue, this tournament in Alaska was a unique experience. Being both challenging and gratifying, her capacity to adapt to the conditions and the course layout resulted in her reaching the final round again. Revisiting the tournament, Sue highlights that while each hole was a challenge, the difficulty level drove her to focus more and elevate her game. However, even she had to concede to the grit of Shelly Stoffer who was simply excellent on the course and wrapped up the tournament victoriously.

Sue's Takeaways from Alaska Tournament

This tournament taught Sue valuable lessons on resilience and adaptation. Despite the pressure, she strived to give her best shot on each hole, even when circumstances were not in her favor. This experience resonated as a reminder that in golf, like in life, you need to remain composed, enjoy the journey, and relish every opportunity regardless of the outcome.

The Final Match

The final match between Sue and Stoffer was indeed a nail-biter. Stoffer was in smashing form throughout the match, making some phenomenal shots that kept Sue on her toes. Despite a few good chances, Sue fell short and Stoffer displayed more accuracy on important occasions, eventually wrapping up the game in her favor.

This tournament taught Sue the significance of persistence and continued effort even when faced with tough competitors. Regardless of the outcome, Sue considers it a privilege to have competed in such a grand event and looks back on the Alaska Tournament with fondness.
