Swing Technique Tip

Here are some golf swing tips to improve your game:

  1. Remember what a great shot feels like and try to repeat it instead of focusing on foul shots.
  2. Pay attention to where your club hits the ground. Except for a driver and putter, every club should hit the ground slightly before the ball. The common misconception is that hitting the ground is bad but it's essential for a good shot. To avoid hitting the ground behind the ball, shift your weight onto your left side before impact.
  3. Prioritize consistency, then hitting straight and then hitting farther. To hit straight, focus on the path and face of your club. The path should be straight, not outside in or inside out. The face should be square to your target.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate improvement. Keep practicing and focusing on these tips; you'll see results over time.

Q&A

Q: What does Justin tell students working on shortening their backswing?

A: Justin advises students working on shortening their backswing to focus on arm runoff when their arms continue to move after their body stops turning. The rule of thumb is to stop your arms when your body stops turning. He suggests practicing half shots and filming yourself to ensure you only take the club halfway back and swing through to a full finish. Doing this lets you see if you are in a perfect position at the top and convince yourself only to go halfway back. Filming yourself also helps you to distinguish between what you feel and what is happening in reality.

Q: How do you take shortening backswings one step further rather than staying on a plane?

A: The key is to keep the arms, shoulders, and upper center rotating in unison back to stay on the same plane. If you only go halfway back, you can easily turn and stay on the plane. Going too high with the arms can cause disconnection. If you can hit the ball well with a short backswing, you can increase the backswing by continuing to turn and keeping the club on the plane.

Q: How do I sustain the consistency of a good shot?

A: To sustain the consistency of a good golf shot, you must have a mental routine you go through every time you hit a shot. This routine should be consistent and unrelated to everything else that's going on. You should have a physical cue to start your routine. Aim your club faces first and your body second, think about where you want the ball to go, use a positive phrase as your focus point, and reinforce your mental game after you hit the shot. The book "With Winning in Mind" by Lanny Bassham covers these concepts in detail. Inconsistency in golf is often due to inconsistency in the mental game, so having a plan and sticking to it is key.

Q: What's a good mental way to think about ball placement from on the tee box to putting?

A: To have a consistent ball placement from tee box to putt, it's essential to use a T-square during practice with two alignment sticks pointing at the ball's position. To ensure consistency, place your feet together, step left and right, and position the ball according to club type (middle for an 8-iron, backward for less club, forward for more club). The T-square in practice will help you perfect your alignment and ball placement routine.

Q: How does Justin rank as a trainer in Arizona or the country?

A: Justin is recognized as a top teacher in the state of Arizona by Golf Dive. He is also recognized as the best young teacher, which ranks him among all young teachers.
