Energy Hacks with Will Armijo

beginner golfers food & drink golf tips and tricks on the course podcast

In this episode of the T-Time, Tori is joined by returning guest Will Armijo to discuss energy hacks for better golf. Tori mentions that it hasn’t been long since Will’s last appearance, but it was necessary to have him back to provide tips on energy, nutrition, recovery, and mindset for golfers.

Experience with Caddies at TPC Stadium Course

Tori asks Will to share about his recent experience golfing at TPC Stadium Course with caddies. Will says his expectations were high based on a past great caddy experience at Bandon Dunes, but the TPC caddies did not watch them hit balls at the range and seemed disinterested. The caddies misaligned up putts several times and did the bare minimum in terms of helping read greens and choose clubs. Will wishes he had just shared a caddy with a friend instead.

Hitting the Famous 16th Hole at TPC Stadium

Will tells a story about playing the famous 16th hole at TPC Stadium with the stands up, on a golf outing for a friend’s birthday. He mentions hitting his ball to within 4-5 feet of the hole for a good chance at birdie. However, despite having two videographers with them all day, they failed to capture Will’s great shot on video.

The Mindset of a Pitcher in Baseball Relating to Golf

Tori asks Will why he has such a strong passion for golf. Will explains that he grew up playing competitive baseball at a very high level. He relates being a pitcher in baseball to playing golf. As a pitcher, the whole game relies on you and your next move. Similarly in golf, one bad shot can ruin your whole round if you let it negatively impact your mindset. Will applied his mental toughness from pitching to remain calm and confident during a round of golf.

Practicing Golf at Your Peak Brain Power Times

Tori and Will discuss when the optimal time of day is to practice your golf game. Will suggests dedicating 70% of practice time to when your brain is sharpest, so you can ingrain proper technique. The other 30% of practice should occur when you are tired, to train your brain to overcome fatigue and external factors during actual rounds. By practicing when not at your best, you build mental toughness.

How Nutrition Impacts Energy Levels for Golf

Regarding energy level, Will explains it is less about quick fixes like caffeine and more about avoiding energy crashes. He says sleep is absolutely crucial for playing your best golf. In terms of nutrition, watch your portions and the timing of meals so as not to cause energy dips. Will advises eating small balanced meals spaced out to sustain energy. Avoid processed sugar and stick to complex carbs, fiber, and healthy fats. Manage caffeine intake and get enough calories daily based on your needs.

Preparing Your Body Leading up to a Tournament

When asked how to prep your body before a big 3-day tournament, Will recommends loading up on fruit, potatoes, and healthy carbs for 3-4 days out. This fills your muscle glycogen stores to power you through long days walking the course. It’s also vital to get quality sleep during the tournament, taking sleep supplements if needed. Melatonin, magnesium, and zinc can help without grogginess. Recovery days focus on lots of rest and getting your feet up.

Dealing with Pain and Inflammation when Golfing

Regarding frequent pain medication use, Will suggests improving mobility first before popping pills. Tight hips/hamstrings contribute to back issues, for example. Supplements like glucosamine and bone broth can help joints. If you still suffer from consistent inflammation doing an elimination diet is wise, as you could have a slight sensitivity to a certain food causing issues. Anti-inflammatory foods and supplements can help long-term.

Wrapping Up and Where to Find Will

Tori closes out thanking Will for all the great tips. Will lets listeners know they can find him on Instagram @i.am.willpowered and the website for his nutrition company nrish.com. The pair jokes about doing a future pod on peptides for weight loss.
