What is a Golf Handicap?

beginner golfers golf tips and tricks handicap index

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete with each other on relatively equal terms. In stroke play - as opposed to matching play - this is typically eighteen holes. The most common match-play format (in professional and amateur competitions) uses either nine or eighteen holes per side.

A handicap is necessary because it allows golfers of widely varying abilities the opportunity to compete against each other in what would otherwise be an unfair contest.

Example of What a Golf Handicap Looks Like

Golf Handicap is demonstrated by a number ranging from 0-40, including one decimal place. So if a player has a handicap of 10.8, that would mean they are playing that value off scratch.

Handicap Notes

Handicaps are helpful because they allow players of different skill levels to compete with each other on a relatively even playing field.

  • The lower the handicap number, the better the golfer.
  • Your handicap is based on your last 20 scores only.
  • After you record a score, your handicap will adjust immediately.
  • If you have a handicap, you have to record every golf round you play.
  • When a golfer refers to their 'Net Score,' that is the score they use when their handicap is applied.

Example:

They shoot an actual (Gross Score) 85 on the course, but their Net Score is a 70 because they are a 15 handicap.

What's Cool About Having a Handicap?

A golf handicap allows you to compete against any other golfer regardless of their ability. It will enable an even playing field.

Your Handicap is Your POTENTIAL! Not what you Should Be Scoring every round.

Do I need a Handicap?

Not Necessarily!

If you just like to go out and play for fun, don't worry about a handicap.

If you plan to play in golf tournaments or against your buddies, you will need to establish a handicap.

How Do I Establish a Golf Handicap?

The process of establishing a handicap is relatively straightforward. Once you have played three 18-hole rounds or six 9-hole rounds, you can figure out your handicap.
