T-Time Podcast // Ep. 25: PT 2 of the Top 5 Rules You HAVE TO KNOW When Playing a Tournament

beginner golfers golf tips and tricks on the course podcast

Golf is a sport that prides itself on its tradition of etiquette, which includes showing respect to fellow players, the golf course, and the game itself. When playing in a golf tournament, it's important to understand and follow the proper etiquette to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience. This includes punctuality, dressing appropriately, respecting the golf course, keeping up with the pace of play, and adhering to the game's rules. Additionally, players should be mindful of their behavior and avoid distracting or disruptive actions that could impact their fellow competitors. By following these guidelines, golfers can demonstrate good sportsmanship and uphold the longstanding tradition of golf etiquette in tournament play.

Tori will be joined by Kim, Tara, and Pat to discuss another five etiquette rules you need to know when playing in a tournament. Each of them has compiled a list of these rules. In this episode, they will review these rules and explain why they are important.

1.      Showing Up

When you commit to playing in a golf tournament, you must honor that commitment by showing up for all the tournament days. Canceling at the last minute can cause a lot of inconvenience for your partner, and it may be difficult to find a last-minute replacement. Additionally, not showing up can reflect poorly on your reputation and may lead to exclusion from future events. By showing up and fulfilling your commitment, you demonstrate respect for your partner and contribute to the smooth running of the tournament.

2.      Figure Out the Scorecard and Who Drives Before Starting

It's essential to decide who will drive and keep score before starting the game, as this ensures everyone is on the same page. It's also important to agree on how the scorecard will be kept to avoid confusion or disputes. Doing this ensures that everyone is aware of the expectations and can focus on the game.

3.      Don't Fish for Golf Balls in a Tournament

In a golf tournament, it's essential to maintain a sense of etiquette and professionalism. Fishing for golf balls is inappropriate and can be seen as a sign of poor sportsmanship. If you hit a ball out of bounds or into a hazard, it's better to declare it lost and play a provisional ball from where your last shot was played. Always carry extra golf balls with you to avoid the need to search for lost balls during a tournament. This will help you save time and avoid any potential embarrassment.

4.      Stepping in Line for Putting:

When you step in line with your partner's ball, you risk moving it slightly, which can lead to a penalty. It's crucial to be aware of the balls' position and give them the required space. To avoid causing any disturbance, it's best to stand still and avoid any unnecessary movement while your partner is putting. Remember to repair any ball marks or footprints left on the green to ensure the course is in good condition for the next group of players.

5.      Flag In or Out

When putting, golfers need to decide whether to leave the flagstick in or take it out of the hole. Leaving it in can provide a reference point and potentially save a stroke if the ball hits it. Taking it out can allow for better judgment of speed and break. The decision depends on personal preference and the conditions of the green. Golfers need to agree on the placement before putting. A rule change in 2019 allows players to leave the flagstick in when putting on the green or off it to speed up play.

Conclusion

Following the etiquette rules in golf tournaments is essential for maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring that everyone has a good time. Golf is a sport that values respect, sportsmanship, and fair play. Following these etiquette rules helps to uphold these values. In addition to the general etiquette rules, there are several other important guidelines to remember when attending or participating in sports activities. These include:

  •  Respect the officials: Referees, umpires, and other officials play a critical role in sports events, and it is important to treat them with respect. Avoid criticizing their decisions or making derogatory comments about them.
  •  Don't interfere with the game: It can be tempting to yell advice or instructions to players on the field, but this can be distracting and disruptive. Stay focused on the game and let the players do their job.
  •  Mind your language: Using foul and offensive language can be offensive to others, especially children. Keep your language clean and respectful at all times.
  •  Be considerate of others: Remember that you are not the only one attending the event or participating in the activity. Be mindful of other people's space, time, and views.
  •  Follow the rules: Every sport has specific rules and regulations that must be followed. Understand and abide by the game's rules whether you are a player or a spectator.
