T-Time Podcast // Ep. 20: From a 10 Handicap Index to a 1 Index in 18 Months with Michael Hutchinson

golf tips and tricks handicap index podcast

On today's show episode, Tori and Michael Hutchinson share some incredible insights into improving your golf game. As a data scientist and golf enthusiast, Michael was able to use his skills to break down his game and identify areas for improvement. His disciplined approach and dedication to practice lowered his handicap from a 10 to a one in just 18 months.

One of the key takeaways from Michael's journey is the importance of data-driven analysis in identifying areas for improvement. By tracking and analyzing his performance on the course, Michael could pinpoint his weaknesses and focus on them during his practice sessions. Another important lesson Michael will share is the importance of discipline and consistency in practice. By setting aside time each day to work on specific areas of his game, he was able to see steady improvement over time. This approach requires dedication and a willingness to work, but the results can be remarkable.

Michael's journey and the tips he will share are valuable resources for anyone looking to improve their golf game. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting, there is always room for growth and improvement on the course. By adopting a data-driven approach, focusing on specific areas for improvement, and maintaining a disciplined practice routine, you, too, can take your game to the next level.

Michael’s Golf Game Right Now

Michael's golf game is not where he would like it to be, as he hasn't been playing as much. However, he has been practicing and focusing on technique work, strength, and speed training. He's working on keeping his center of mass back with the driver to increase speed and has two different driver swings for different situations. Michael also alternates between driver, wedge, and short iron swings, as they are different, and he doesn't want to carry over any issues from one to the other. As the season approaches, he plans to tighten up and do more on-course work for the random tournaments and events he participates in.

Michael’s Journey in Golf

Michael grew up playing baseball but discovered his love for golf when he hit golf balls in the field behind his house. He played golf in high school but struggled with improvement and took a 20-year hiatus from the sport. A trip to Monterey and discovering new technology and metrics motivated him to return to the game and improve his skills. Michael finds golf's constant iterative improvement process to be motivational and has been learning as much as he can from teachers and resources like Twitter.

First Steps to Becoming a 1 Index

Becoming a single-digit handicap in golf is a challenging but achievable goal for many golfers. The author outlines five key areas for improving one's game and achieving this goal in this passage.

1.   Ground Strikes:

One of the most important aspects of becoming a single-digit handicap in golf is understanding the concept of ground strikes. This involves using strokes gained metrics to analyze all aspects of your game, from the tee box to putting. By knowing where you are losing strokes, you can focus your practice efforts on improving those areas, which can ultimately help you shave strokes off your scorecard.

2.   Face Strike:

The second point to consider is face strike. This refers to where you are hitting the ball on the face of the club. It's important to know whether you have a toe or heel bias, as this can affect your shots' distance and direction. Moving the ball around the clubface intentionally is an underrated skill that can help you save strokes on the course.

3.   Face Direction:

Face direction refers to where the club face is pointing at impact. Many golfers mistakenly believe that their swing path is the most important factor in determining their shots' direction, but the face direction has the greatest influence. Understanding this concept can help you diagnose problems with your swing and make adjustments accordingly.

4.   Strategy:

Developing a sound strategy is key to becoming a single-digit handicap golfer. This involves knowing your shot dispersion patterns to make smart decisions on the course. For example, if you tend to slice the ball, aiming left or center on certain holes may make more sense. Having a game plan, you can take some guesswork out of your shots and make more confident swings.

5.   Mental Game:

Finally, the mental aspect of golf cannot be overlooked. Golf is a game that requires focus, patience, and resilience. Developing a strong mental game involves learning to stay focused on the task, regardless of the outcome of your previous shots. It also involves developing a positive attitude and avoiding negative self-talk. By mastering the mental side of the game, you can become a more consistent and confident player on the course.

If you want to become more productive, it's important to prioritize your tasks, avoid multitasking, take breaks, and practice good time management skills. Additionally, it can be helpful to create a positive and organized workspace, eliminate distractions, and develop healthy habits like exercise and a good sleep schedule. Implementing these tips into your daily routine can increase your productivity and accomplish more in less time while improving your overall well-being.

What Helped Michael the Most in His 1-Index Journey

Michael found two things to be most helpful in his 1-Index journey. First, he did technique work with Adam, which helped him correct his in-to-out swing path caused by an early extension. This helped him create a more neutral path. Second, he had access to a launch monitor, which gave him feedback on his swing. Although not everyone may have access to a launch monitor, renting time with one or working with a coach who has one is now possible. This feedback helped Michael understand his swing tendencies and adjust accordingly. He also mentioned that there are many simulator-type places where one can rent time and practice independently, but having a knowledgeable person explain the numbers can be beneficial. Overall, the combination of technique work and feedback from a launch monitor proved extremely helpful for Michael in improving his golf game.
