5 Steps to Getting a Handicap

beginner golfers golf tips and tricks handicap index

A golf handicap is a numerical estimate of your golfing potential. It allows players with varying levels of expertise to compete against one another on relatively equal terms in stroke play. Keep in mind that your Handicap is YOUR POTENTIAL, not what you should be scoring every round.

Don't worry about the golf handicap if you are a golfer who is a super casual, twice-a-year type of player. However, if you're going to compete in golf tournaments or against your pals, you'll need to establish a handicap.

Following these 5 simple steps, you can estimate your handicap after playing three 18-hole rounds or six 9-hole rounds.

Step One

To establish a handicap, you need to obtain a USGA GHIN number. You can only do this by joining one of the USGA's authorized golf clubs.

Step Two

Your local Golf Association is available to help you!

Click the link in my bio, scroll down and find your local Golf Association. I am in Arizona, so the Arizona Golf Association is who I would contact.

Step Three

Call or Email your local Golf Association and say, "I'm looking to join an online club that will enable me to establish a handicap via GHIN."

Step Four

Sign up for the eClub (or other Golf Club) that the Association suggests.

It is important to note that they might suggest an actual club/league for you to join if that is something that might interest you.

For example, I belong to the Papago WGA, a ladies league at a public course. My league membership includes a GHIN handicap through the Arizona Golf Association.

Step Five

Once you have your GHIN number, you can start posting scores using the GHIN app.

What's Next?

Once you post your three 18-hole scores or six 9-hole scores, GHIN will compute your handicap index.

Final Words

Getting a Handicap is easier than you think. In fact, I suggest telling your golfing friends about it so they can have their Handicap as well!

Follow these steps, and you'll be on your way to being a Golf Handicap!
